I remember doing treasure hunts when I was a child, we would take it in turns to hide small Tupperware containers in the soil at our local allotment, trying to work out the clues and find the hidden treasure, then we advanced to doing car treasure hunts around the country. Adults alike still look for the ultimate hide and seek adventure and have now turned to something more advanced using a GPS devices.
Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment.
Geocaching is an activity that brings the family together.
For the traditional geocache, a geocacher will place a waterproof container containing a log book (with a pen) and trade items then record the cache’s coordinates. These coordinates, along with other details of the location, are posted on a listing site.
Other geocachers obtain the coordinates from that listing site and seek out the cache using their GPS handheld receivers. The finding geocachers record their exploits in the logbook and online. Geocachers are free to take objects (except the logbook and pen etc) from the cache in exchange for leaving something of similar or higher value, so there is treasure for the next person to find. Typical cache treasures are not high in monetary value but may hold personal value to the finder.

As an exponent of the hobby I can vouch for it being great fun. It may even become mainstream one day as the videoclip shows! And very cost effective as a hobby.
